The Sun Grant Western Regional Center in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy hosted the Western Regional Biomass Feedstock Partnership Workshop on August 27-29, 2007 in Portland, OR. The main theme of the first annual workshop was “Managing Volume in a Mixed Feedstock Region.” This theme reflects the unique character of the Western Region, which is a culturally diverse area with widely variable environments and ecosystems that support a diverse array of feedstocks.
This invitational workshop facilitated the development of biomass resources in the Western region, by helping to identify technical and economic barriers to biomass development and set region-specific goals of biomass development.
Plenary sessions explored regional biomass issues, such as cost of delivery, competing uses and highest use of western feedstocks; describe current regional partnerships and the latest estimates of feedstock volumes; and investigate the best technologies for available feedstocks.
Participants discused these issues with other feedstock producers, biomass conversion experts, academic researchers and extension agents, industry representatives, state policy groups and federal biomass and bioenergy experts. Each participant participated in three different working groups under the broad themes of feedstocks, technologies and cross-cutting issues. In order to prepare for the workshop, participants were asked to read supporting documents posted as Background Materials for the Workshop.
Presenters' and Working Group notes are being posted as they become available. See:
