The Sun Grant Western Regional Center (WC) announces a special call under its Competitive Grants Program to support research, education and outreach projects. The WC seeks to fund one project that focuses on biomass that can be used for biofuels/bioproducts. The feedstock (s) must be those that are new or currently recognized feedstocks that grow in unique or isolated Western landscapes, grow in locations without capacity to grow large acreages of biomass, or may be small scale feedstocks. Proposals that address collection, storage, and transportation factors related to these feedstocks are also welcome.
Under this special call we expect to award up to $150,000 for a one- or two-year project. Proposals must come from Land Grant Institution investigators and must address the stated regional programmatic priorities. Co-investigators may include the private or public sector, nonprofit organizations, or other institutions of higher education. If feasible, we encourage multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional proposals. Integration, economics, marketing, policy, education or a combination of these overarching activities may be incorporated in any proposal. It is not anticipated that investigators will be able to begin their projects before August 2008 due to the peer and budget review processes.
U.S. Department of Transportation has limited indirect to 20% of the total federal project cost or 25% of the direct federal dollars requested. Projects must also include 20% cost-share.
The Sun Grant mission is to focus the abilities of the region’s land grant institutions in partnership with the private sector and federal laboratories to enhance national energy security and independence through the development, distribution and implementation of bio-based energy technologies, to promote bio-based diversification and environmental sustainability of the region’s agriculture, and to promote opportunities for bio-based economic diversification in rural communities.
In order to submit a proposal, an acceptable Letter of Intent (LOI) must be submitted by February 28, 2008. Full Applications (FA) are due by April 15, 2008. All application materials must be submitted through an online proposal system located at http://webnibus.org/sungrant/western. See the full Request for Applications for submission guidelines, timetables, and other application information.
For FAs not originating from Oregon State University, a copy of the Land Grant Institution’s signed proposal transmittal form or letter, as well as the institution’s negotiated rate agreement, should be scanned and attached to the online proposal site. These are not necessary for the LOI.
