OSU Moves Forward To Meet President's Call For Bio-Energy Research
President Bush's 2006 State-of-the-Union address included a challenging goal: "to replace more than 75 percent of our oil imports from the Middle East by 2025." As a critical component of his proposal, the president pledged support for research in cutting-edge methods to produce biofuels. That research is already underway at Oregon State University and the Sun Grant Western Region.
The federal government has granted $8 million over four years to OSU as one of the country's five Sun Grant centers of excellence -- regional hubs charged with research and development of new technologies for using agricultural wastes, residues and new crops for the production of bio-energy. [more]

Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns today announced the availability of funding of more than $19 million in grants to support the development of renewable energy projects and value-added agricultural business ventures. Also, he announced 33 rural economic development loan and grant recipients will receive $18.8 million to spur economic growth and create or save more than 2,700 jobs in 19 states. [more]
